Legend of Korra – Role Reversal
1: The Engineer’s late night
Avatar Aang died in 152 AG.
And although his death, at 65 years of age, was a tragedy to many, the end of a golden era, it was also something to be celebrated. For like the cycle of seasons, the Avatar Cycle kept on turning and a new avatar was about to be born.
Aang had been the Avatar of Air and so the White Lotus canvassed both the Northern and Southern Water Tribes for the new Avatar. They even sent emissaries to the Foggy Swamp Tribe on the off-chance they would have been born there. But of the new Avatar, there was no sign. After five years, some began to worry that Aang’s brief brush with death over fifty years before might have broken the Avatar Cycle.
Hadn’t they been so focused on the conservative way of thinking, with the Four Nations as clearly separate and distinct populations, they might not have been so surprised at the origin of the new Avatar. Avatar Aang himself had broken the traditional and more and more obsolete barriers between the mingling of people. He had created the United Republic of Nations.
It was fitting that his reincarnation would be born from the cosmopolitan Republic City and that she would look nothing like a waterbender. Continue reading
I ripped the hat off my head and passed it to McGonagall. She gave me a wide smile in return, reminding me that she was Gryffindor’s head of house. My new head of house. I smiled back at her and hurried to the last table on the left amidst raucous applause. Kenneth Towler, from Cedric’s compartment, got to his feet and whistled enthusiastically for me. I smiled, waved at him briefly, and accepted the seat he opened up for me. Coincidentally, it was also far away from the red-haired prefect from the train and the twins that had accosted us.
As I sat, I checked on Amy. She still looked scared, so I gave her a quick thumbs up. She didn’t relax completely, but she didn’t look ready to bolt anymore. Good.
Kenneth raised his empty glass in my direction. “Welcome to Gryffindor, house of the brave.” Continue reading
A hand shook my shoulder, an insistent “Amy, Amy wake up,” disturbing my rest. I wasn’t sleeping, I was just resting my eyes for a bit. It was different, damn it.
“I’m aa…” I tried to stop it, but the yawn ripped itself from me regardless. Traitor. “…wake. I’m awake.”
I blinked the cotton webs away. Taylor was standing in front of me, wearing the black robes of the Hogwarts uniform. The window’s blind had been lowered and the books she’d taken out of her suitcase were nowhere to be seen. How long had I been out?
“A prefect came by.” She said, drawing back. “We’re nearing Hogwarts. Put on your uniform and get your things ready. I’ll step out for a moment, give you some privacy.” Continue reading

Prompt: Drabble Tag 6 – perfect
Word count: 200
Notes: Kendogi is the upper part of kendo’s uniform. The trousers are called hakama. Shinai are practice bamboo swords, the kissaki are the leather caps that tops those swords. Before the invention of the shinai, bokuto (wooden sword) and blunted swords were used instead, causing many injuries. Men is the helmet used in kendo, but also the uppermost point of an oponent’s head, one of the places to strike. Suburi are empty cuts, cuts practiced on air, one of the first things learned in kendo and practiced constantly regardless of level or ability. Chudan is the basic stance in kendo, the middle-height stance. The sword is held in front of the body and it’s a balanced position for both offense and defense.
